Health & Experience

The Kathmandu to Lhasa tour via Everest Base Camp involves five to six hours driving per day and some walking- although walking is not mandatory. Please not that you will be travelling at high altitude and this can be physically taxing. There are no special physical requirements, but high altitude experience is a plus.

Accommodation
All accommodation has been carefully selected for their high standards in hygiene, service, location and food quality. All accommodation is based on a twin share basis (with someone from the same sex). During your tour we will use the Snowland Hotel in Nyalum (Shared bathroom), the Snow leopard hotel in Lotingri/ old Tingri, the Shanghai hotel or similar hotel in Lhatse, the Everest View Hotel or similar hotel in Ronbuk, the Manasarover Hotel or Shengkang Hotel in Xigatse, the Gyantse Hotel or similar hotel in Gyantse and the Kyichu Hotel or similar hotel in Lhasa. If you prefer not to share accommodation during your tour a single supplement is available at U$ 200 and we will do our best to assure a single room.

Meals
Breakfast is included throughout this tour. Most hotels will offer a Tibetan or continental style cooked breakfast. Lunch and dinner will be at your own expense and as a rough guide, should cost between US10 to U$16 per day.

Visas and Travel Permits
Aside from a visa for China, travelers to Tibet must also obtain a permit from the Tibetan Tourism Bureau. In order for ShapShap Travel and its partners to organize your Tibet travel permit, please send us a copy of your passport as soon as you book this trip (if you are planning to enter Tibet via Nepal). If you plan on entering Tibet via China, you need to send us copy of your passport and the Chinese visa as soon as you book the trip.

Acclimatization
Keep in mind that you are traveling overland to the highest plateau in the world- the drive constantly goes above 5000m/ 16400ft during your journey except in Lhasa where the altitude is 3,650m/ 11,975ft. To avoid Acute Mountain Sickness, the drive will be relatively slow in order to give your body time to acclimatize. There is 50% less oxygen at these high altitudes compared to sea level. The higher the altitude, the less oxygen in the air. Your body needs few days to acclimatize to this low oxygen environment. Before you travel, please speak to your doctor about the effects of high altitude and the pros and cons of using medication such as Diamox.

Sensible planning would help to minimize AMS during the tour. Thus, before joining this tour, we advise clients to take part in activities or a trek at altitude in Nepal or elsewhere. Our Everest Base Camp Trek is perfect for this.

Tour Leader(s) & Staff Arrangements
All our tour leaders speak fluent English and know all the complexities and history of the areas they travel in. All our Tibet trips are run in cooperation with our Tibetan counterparts, so you can be sure of that authentic local touch. For the Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour via Everest Base Camp tour there will be one leader for each group. We can run the Kathmandu to Lhasa Tour for as few as two people and up to eight people. However if you'd like to make a group booking for more than eight people it can easily be arranged and you can choose the dates that best suit you.

Pre Trip Meeting
We will have a pre trip meeting in Kathmandu prior to the tour departure. Clients should be in Kathmandu at least 2 days before the trip starts in order to prepare the documents and permits needed. The Kathmandu to Lhasa tour does not include accommodation in Kathmandu, but we can of course arrange this for you.

Important Note
Your safety is of paramount concern. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the intended itinerary; however, as this is adventure travel in a remote mountainous region, we cannot guarantee it! Weather conditions, health conditions of another member of the group, unexpected natural disasters, etc, can all contribute to changes in the itinerary. The tour leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required. And as always on an adventurous trip- travel with an open mind.

NOTE: We must receive a scanned copy of your passport at least 15 days prior to the departure.
